Workers Unite - The Rich Against the Poor

  • 1860: Shoemakers Strike in Lynn
  • Modern History Sourcebook: Harriet Robinson: Lowell Mill Girls

Assignment 1

Read the above two articles as well as pages 153 – 158 in Zinn’s book and discuss in 2-3 pages the many difficulties that workers faced back in the 1850’s. Include differences between male and female laborers, working conditions, and any resistance that came out of this time period. Make sure to relate this to workers today (ie garment workers in Los Angeles and their struggles).

Classroom Project

As a class, read some of Lucy Parsons writing and discuss her words were a form of resistance. Have students make connections between this work and others that followed in her footsteps.

Read through the information on Lucy Parsons and create a dialogue that you could have with her if you had the opportunity to meet her. It can be in an interview style or something that you would like to share with her about your desire to be an activist or any type of narrative written about what you think of her accomplishments.
